To the best of my recollection, Hillside Angus Farm began in 1955 when I was five years old. Grandpa Simon woke my brother Steven and me at 4 o’clock in the morning and put us in the back seat of his Cadillac to take us to the town of Griffin, Georgia. He told us we were going fishing at his friend, Mr. Cook’s farm pond. An hour later, Grandpa woke us up, and said to us with excitement, “Let’s go fishing boys!” Steven and I stepped out of the car into a farm pasture and were immediately wide awake as we breathed in the fresh early morning country air that is nature’s special gift.
As we gathered our fishing equipment and packed lunches, we followed Grandpa through the grass towards a gate. As I looked up, I saw a picture before my eyes that I have never forgotten. Between us and the gate was the beautiful green pasture grass with several cows looking at us with curiosity. As we walked towards the cows they appeared to be welcoming us to their beautiful and serene paradise in which nature provides for all one’s needs, both physical and spiritual. When we went through the gate to the pond to fish that morning, I knew then that Hillside Angus Farm had been born in my heart.
